Introduction and aim: The aim of article is to present the new classification of diseases of peri-implant tissues and also summarize the available evidence about their etiology and prevention.

Materials and methods: A search was conducted in the PubMed-MEDLINE, Scopus, EMBASE, Google Scholar databases and available repositories, followed by hand search. The relevant clinical studies, reviews and consensuses about peri-implant tissues and their health and diseases which were published between 1990–2021 in English language were included.

Conclusion: In the case of knowing the risk factors in developing of disease of peri-implant tissues it is more then appropriate to select eligible patient. The patients with active marginal periodontitis must not be treatetd with dental implants before its stabilization. In the event that
further risk factors such as diabetes mellitus or smoking are present we should consider another prosthodontic alternatives. Consecutive follow-up of patient should be initiated immediately after dental implant placement and should be repeated regularly.

Keywords: dental implant, peri-implantitis, mucositis, supportive implant therapy
